Benefits provided by the Health Insurance Fund
The benefit for temporary incapacity for work is paid based on a certificate of incapacity for work to an employed insured person who, due to a temporary leave from work, loses the income subject to social security tax.
When calculating the benefit for incapacity for work, doctoral student benefits, the parental benefit, and other benefits paid by the rural municipality, city, or artistic association and the social tax paid on them are not taken into account.
The subcategories of temporary incapacity for work benefit are as follows
- The sickness benefit is paid on the basis of a certificate of incapacity for work to an insured person who is on a temporary leave from work. More information on the different sickness benefits.

In addition to benefits for temporary incapacity for work, there are a number of other non-monetary benefits available
- The dental care benefit is paid to adults with health insurance, persons with partial or total loss of capacity for work, persons over 63 years of age with health insurance, pregnant people, mothers of children under one year of age, persons with increased dental care needs, persons who have registered as unemployed with the Estonian Unemployment Insurance Fund, and persons who have received the subsistence benefit within the last two calendar months preceding the month in which they receive dental care. - Denture benefit is available to insured persons over 63 years of age, persons with partial or total loss of capacity for work, and persons receiving old-age pension or pension for incapacity for work. More information on the terms of compensation.
- Supplementary benefit for medicinal products is available to insured persons who pay at least 100 euros per calendar year for medicinal products bought with a reimbursable prescription. The supplementary benefit for medicinal products applies to the cost of reimbursable medicinal products. The supplementary benefit for medicinal products is granted if the conditions for receiving the benefit are met.
- Reimbursement of medicinal products. The Health Insurance Fund will reimburses to a certain extent the cost of prescription medicinal products, the effectiveness of which has been thoroughly assessed and which, therefore, have been included in the list of reimbursed medicinal products.
